II. Introduction Thanks for checking my guide. I decided to make this on a whim after seeing a topic about one of Puffy's bizarre quotes on the Star Ocean 3 boards. There's a lot of inventors and locales, so I figured there were a ton of amusing quotes people haven't picked up yet. Seeing as how no one has documented them yet, I decided to repent my sins and contribute to the community. If you're looking for information on the Item Creation system itself, I'd recommend using A I e x's great Iteam Creation FAQ. If you're looking for anything in particular, just use Ctrl-F and search for the numeral for the section you're especially interested in. III. The Inventors There are 28 inventors available for you to sign. Since the focus of this guide is basically the inventors themselves, I'll list their character descriptions, as well as their specialty and talent level. Mishell - Age 12 - Writing, Talent Level 35 Boy genius with a 190 IQ. He shines brightest in the field of literature. Fully understands the reason why adults tend to handle him with kid gloves. The unbalanced aura his lingering childness gives him is the secret to his popularity with the ladies. Eliza - Age 17 - Alchemy, Talent Level 4 Blundering alchemist who got where she is today by single-mindedly persuing her dreams without letting anything like her utter lack of talent get in the way. However, a single smile on her carefree face has the magical power to transform criticism about her blunders and stupidity into praise. Grats - Age 65 - Smithery, Talent Level 25 Old soldier who left the military to become a blacksmith. His experiences on the battlefield sometimes give him an edge over his competition. Adheres to a full hands-on approach and will more than likely produce a highly practical, first-rate item someday soon. His weapons feature an unornamental simplicity favored by professionals. The Killer Chef - Age 28 - Cooking, Talent Level 75 Rumors of blood falling like rain wherever he goes earned him the name of "Killer Chef." Seems to confuse cooking and violence, but according to his inner circle, his ability is top notch. His philosophical experession when lost in thought is bone-chilling. Meryl - Age 15 - Engineering, Talent Level 46 Girl raised from early age alongside her father's machines. Has an unyielding spirit just like her father and has inherited his knack for working with machines. Often puts the adults around her to shame with her ability. Count Noppen - Age 44 - Writing, Talent Level 44 Good-for-nothing Count whose success is comprised of 90% good fortune (his lineage), 5% delusion, and 5% conceit. Uses his overabundant wealth to pay craftsmen to create the things he wants. Even more aggravating, the things they make are quite good. Chilico - Age 98 - Crafting, Talent Level 60 Elfin girl who wears the native dress of some island country. What she lacks in strength, she makes up with the immeasurable knowledge she has obtained over the years. However, her small size is a handicap, adding to the time it takes her to complete a project. Ansala - Age 89 - Alchemy, Talent Level 99 Eminent alchemist known throughout the lands. He finds purpose in the gravel on the roadside and preaches morality to those who are lost. The word "sage" fits him well, for he stakes everything in seeking out and unraveling unknown truths. Lately, it seems he has been considering taking a certain alchemist as his apprentice. Osman the Sage - Age 69 - Writing, Talent Level 73 Learned old man who laments over his age. The end of his lifelong research is still nowhere in sight, so he spends each day tormented by his frustration. Well versed in the mysterious relationship between manmade energy and symbology. Gusto - Age 36 - Smithery, Talent Level 60 Blacksmith who values the traditional techniques handed down from his master. His armor is rated higher than his weapons, but that does not mean his weapons are inferior. What he lacks in innovation, he makes up for with his consistently fine work. Cornelius - Age 25 - Writing, Talent Level 15 Slightly off-kilter young man who longs to live the life of a wandering troubadour. His appearance is unforgettable to the ladies, but he seems to be somewhat lacking in substance. Gossam - Age 64 - Compounding, Talent Level 9 Old philanderer who completely disregards his age and is unequaled in his single-minded persuit of young women. His mere presence elicits shrieks of terror from the ladies. His specialty is love potions, but their efficacy is quite questionable. Stanice - Age 20 - Crafting, Talent Level 20 Featherfolk girl who wields mysterious power. The gems in the craftwork she produces harbor wonderous energies. Perhaps her bashful nature hides a deep, but unpolished passion. Damda Mooda - Age 66 - Cooking, Talent Level 6 Happy-go-lucky old man with the ruddy face of a professional drinker. Master of bizarre, yet flawless cooking that gives his customers a taste of both heaven and hell. Full of ideas, for better or worse. Vanilla - Age 12 - Engineering, Talent Level 32 Appears to be some sort of bunny-like humanoid. Possesses techniques and knowledge that puts humans to shame. Somehow able to manipulate precision machinery with his animal-like hands. Skilled at mechanical work, but is also known for making delectable carrot-based dishes. Balbados - Age 50 - Crafting, Talent Level 37 Menodix peddler who wanders the lands, selling his unsual craftworks. Don't be fooled by his looks--he's a compentent craftsman that produces some rather fine items. He's fussy about money, as peddlers tend to be, but he's not without a heart. In the end, it is all about the negotiation. Boyd - Age 46 - Smithery, Talent Level 95 Skilled blacksmith enthralled by steel and flames. Has lately started to sense the paradox of mastering the creation of armor that preserves life and swords that take it. Possesses considerable skills, but his recent ambivalence has negatively affected the pace of his work. Mackwell - Age 26 - Alchemy, Talent Level 31 One would not expect this stylish fellow to be, in actuality, a dour man who spends day and night engrossed in alchemical research. Uses special exploding potions to chase away the woman who cannot help but seek his attentions. Though taciturn and inhospitable, he is rumored to have several pet cats. Misty Lear - Age ??? - Alchemy, Talent Level 50 Seductively attractive woman who does not reveal her age. Has been divorced and recently suffered the death of her 2-year-old daughter. One must wonder what goes through her mind as she sinks into the depths of sorrow during her alchemy work. Also well versed in symbology and skilled in the art of imbuing stones with symbol magic. Milenya - Age 53 - Compounding, Talent Level 19 Altruistic holy woman who continues to make medicine for the sick and injured. Recently decided to extend her reach by helping people across the land, but is having trouble procuring the necessary funding. Lias - Age 22 - Smithery, Talent Level 36 Young, talented blacksmith who confronts steel and flames with knowledge and logic, despite his lack of strength and experience. Other blacksmiths disparage his unconventional techniques, but his products surpass all others. A harsh critic might rightly say that his work lacks in originality what it possesses in quality. Louise the Diviner - Age 63 - Compounding, Talent Level 98 Compounder claiming to be a thorn in the side of darkness. Her words and deeds serve to keep others at a distance. Many of the potions she creates deal with negative powers belying her familiarity with matters of death. However, her ability is only made possible by her intimate knowledge of positive powers. Mayu - Age 18 - Cooking, Talent Level 20 Young woman who works at the Kirlsa Training Facility. Skilled at cooking that is ordinary yet comforting in a down home kind of way. Said to be a dreamer who easily falls in love. Has many secret admirers. Dejison - Age 87 - Engineering, Talent Level 6 Professes to be the most brilliant scientist in all the lands and calls himself the Invention King. However, everything he invents are nothing more than extreme curiousities. He probably could produce genius-level work if he only had a good assistant. Puffy - Age 16 - Compounding, Talent Level 57 Secret rival who has been waging a bitter fight against SO players since SO1--she's back for a third try. Skilled at poison, paralysis, and petrification compounding, all for the sake of defeating players. Izak - Age 99 - Engineering, Talent Level 65 Anthropomorphic weapon created several hundred years ago by the technological superpower Greeton. Three developers repaired it after coming across the disabled machine on the outskirts of Surferio. Although it was meant to be a killing machine, it is also surprisingly skilled at mechanical work, much to the light of developers both here and abroad. Rigel - Age 24 - Cooking, Talent Level 47 Something just doesn't seem right with this beautiful, yet strange, young woman. It's probably due to her constant complaints of hunger. Apparently, she can't work without eating--a troublesome condition, to be sure. Aqua & Evia - Age 25 and ??? - Crafting, Talent Level 49 A boy and girl of few words. These recluses stay at home and have almost no contact with the outside world. The young woman must have some reason for sticking so close to the young man. Perhaps it has something to do with their recent registration with the Guild. V. Before Registration Typically, before an inventor registers with the Craftsman Guild, which will be announced to you if you have 'Announce Entry' turned on via the Compact Communicator, they will give a different quote than usual. Note that some inventors, such as Eliza, cannot be reached before they register. ------------------------------------------------------- Mishell: "Grownups really have it so easy. It's tough being a kid my age when you have to study day after day." ------------------------------------------------------- Eliza Eliza registers as an inventor immediately upon entering Aquios for the first time, so there isn't an opportunity to speak to her beforehand. ------------------------------------------------------- Grats By the time you reach him, he'll have already registered as an inventor. ------------------------------------------------------- The Killer Chef, referred to as 'Drowglynn Cook': "Bones are hard, and vegetables stick together. Human cuisine is really, really, REALLY hard. Tehehehehe..." ------------------------------------------------------- Meryl: I don't understand how you can rely on such an arcane, imprecise art as runology. Not me! Nope, not interested." ------------------------------------------------------- Count Noppen: "And just who might you be? What are these bumbling guards doing, letting a suspicious-looking character like you in here..." ------------------------------------------------------- Chilico: "Human towns have nothing but humans everywhere. It's weird!" ------------------------------------------------------- Ansala: I came all the way here, and for what? That sniveling little Lasselle has some nerve!" ------------------------------------------------------- Osman the Sage: "I believe in Apris. But that does not mean I agree with the sins committed for the sake of the Kingdom of Aquaria. Pitting one military force against another is the abyss of ignorance. ------------------------------------------------------- Gusto: "Superior weapons corrupt the minds of the inexperienced who overestimate their own ability. Only the most valiant warriors are worthy of wielding the weapons I make." ------------------------------------------------------- Cornelius: "The falling snow. It envelops all in white. It's just like a sinner trying to forget his sins." ------------------------------------------------------- Gossam: "I worry about this kingdom's future as I watch beautiful women walk by. I'm completely against women wearing leggings! And long skirts are inexcusable!" ------------------------------------------------------- Stanice: "Are you a traveler? I was just in the middle of takingg a walk, myself. I haven't managed to get back home yet, though. To get home, I'll have to go over the mountains to the southwest, but that's impossible whil there's snow, so I'm staying here for the winter." ------------------------------------------------------- Damda Mooda Damda Mooda registers as an inventor almost immediately after you do. I didn't think to hold off registering until getting to Aquios, but I have a hunch he would just give his bit about being out of cider. If anyone can confirm otherwise, let me know. =/ ------------------------------------------------------- Vanilla Sends you on a quest so he can make you the Ring of Destruction. ------------------------------------------------------- Balbados: "It's already been many years since I vowed to become famous. I haven't yet found the legendary treasure I seek. I haven't even heard rumor of it. It's not even certain whether it really exists. Ho ho ho..." ------------------------------------------------------- Boyd: "A poorly wielded sword is a sad sword. If you're a warrior of low standing, never blame your inexperience on your weapon." ------------------------------------------------------- Mackwell: "I'm not employed by the castle. An old friend lets me in. So save your questions for somebody else. I've no obligation to show you around." ------------------------------------------------------- Misty Lear: Slaughter carried out in the name of kingdoms... Innocents killed in the name of war... All that's left is the vestiges of a feast held by those enthralled by evil." ------------------------------------------------------- Milenya: "This room isn't very sanitary. I think it'd be unhealthy to remain here for very long. ------------------------------------------------------- Lias: "I'm but an insignificant swordsmith. I'm simply passing through these lands while on my journey." ------------------------------------------------------- Louise the Diviner: "Hmph! Young people these days are worthless and weak! When I was young, people worked so hard, they didn't even want to sleep." ------------------------------------------------------- Mayu You'll meet Mayu for the first time at the Kirlsa Training Facility. She'll give you the Cuprite Key. She isn't referred to by name at this point in the game, so she's referenced as "Stern Matron's Daughter." ------------------------------------------------------- Dejison the Invention King: "Hee hehehe... No matter how many times I see a unit from Greeton's Mechanized Corps, I am awed by its magnificence. If I had the chance, I'd like to build an ultimate machine surpassing even that!" ------------------------------------------------------- Puffy Puffy can only be seen after the main game is complete, so it's impossible to speak to her before she signs on as an inventor. ------------------------------------------------------- Izak Izak cannot be recruited until you have the Blueprints, AI Program, and have Dejison, Vanilla, and Meryl signed on. Izak also never officially registers as an inventor and only appears immediately after you activate him. There's a cute scene between Nel and Fayt if you go near him early on, though. =0 ------------------------------------------------------- Rigel: "*sigh* I'm hungry. My mother is so annoying the way she goes on and on about how taking care of one's appearance is one of the duties of nobility. She won't even hire a chef, though we certainly have the money." ------------------------------------------------------- Aqua, referred to as 'Doll-Like Girl': "My stomach's growling. I'm not sick or anything, it's just that I'm hungry." Evia: "There's not much time left for my daughter and I. I suppose I should at least pass the remaining time with a smile on my face. ------------------------------------------------------- VI. Recruiting Here we'll describe how to recruit each inventor, and their quotes before and after signing on. ------------------------------------------------------- Mishell Location: Central Aquios To recruit, offer: 85,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "Yes, what is it? I'm busy studying. My mission is to write books that help people. I don't have free time like grownups such as you." After showing him 85,000 Fol: "Hmm? Do you want me to write a book or something for you?" After giving him 85,000 Fol: "Any delivery date and any subject matter... So it is quality you seek? I'll be glad to accept the job under such dream-like conditions." Not giving him 85,000 Fol: "Don't bother me unless you really need something. How do you expect me to concentrate?" ------------------------------------------------------- Eliza Location: East Aquios To recruit, offer: 10,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: It must be by mother's influence. I've always found runologists' work fascinating. Once I grew up, I wanted to study many things, but I've given up such ideas completely. The biggest reason is I have an infant brother, and studying requires a considerable sum of money. In short, we don't have the means for such luxuries. *grumble*" After showing her 10,000 Fol: "Oh, my! I've never seen this much money before!" After giving her 10,000 Fol: "I didn't know you and your friends were rich, Fayt. With this money I can study hard and invent lots of things!" Not giving her 10,000 Fol: "Wow, Fayt. I didn't realize you and your friends were rich." ------------------------------------------------------- Grats Location: To recruit, offer: 13,500 Fol Prior to recruiting: "I'm thankful to be right here, right now. It is those who forget the miracle of life who die. A battlefield is that sort of place." After showing him 13,500 Fol: "'Money makes the mare to go' as they say. There are certainly many fools who waste their lives by their miserly ways." After giving him 13,500 Fol: "It's a deal. I shall impart a bit of my vast knowledge and experience upon you." Not giving him 13,500 Fol: "Remember that there are some things in life money cannot buy. There is only death for those who cannot learn that." ------------------------------------------------------- The Killer Chef Location: Lost City of Surferio To recruit, offer: Keen Kitchen Knife Prior to recruiting: "Tehehe, bones are so hard! What I really need is a really sharp knife!" After showing him the Keen Kitchen Knife: "Wow! What an excellent knife you have there! Gimme gimme, gimme that!" After giving him the Keen Kitchen Knife: "I'll slice and dice everything with this! There's a thin line between cuisine and horror, you know. Tehehehehe..." Not giving him the Keen Kitchen Knife: "I want it, I want it! I could slice through anything like butter with that!" ------------------------------------------------------- Meryl Location: Eastern Peterny To recruit, offer: Dremela's Tool Set Prior to recruiting: "*sigh* If I had some better tools, my work would be much easier. But that would be asking too much in a kingdom like this." After showing her Dremela's Tool Set: "Huh!? Is that the new tool set made by Dremela?" After giving her Dremela's Tool Set: "These are the best. Look at their color and shine and how they fit perfectly in your hand. Yes indeed, Dremela's the king of mechanical tools. Yes indeed. If you gave me that tool set, I'd agree to work with you." Not giving her Dremela's Tool Set: "I see... Well, that means that there is at least a channel through which to obtain it. I still have hope... If I'm going to break the law anyway, then it would be better to smuggle in SP tools in light of their manufacturing efficiency. *grumble*" ------------------------------------------------------- Count Noppen Location: Airyglyph Castle, 2F To recruit, offer: 150,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "The woman of this world seem to be obsessed with the love story I've written. No doubt they'd be far more impressed if they only knew I had written that incredibly popular book." After enticing him with 150,00 Fol: "...Are you trying to bribe me? And with this miserable pittance!" After giving him 150,000 Fol: "I suppose it's all right. But... this is exception, understand?" Not giving him 150,000 Fol: "So what is it you want? Speak up." ------------------------------------------------------- Chilico Location: To recruit, offer: 82,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "I love money. It's so shiny and sparkly. It's pretty, that's why I like it. People give me the sparklies, so that's why I decided to be an inventor." After showing her 82,000 Fol: "Ah, look at the sparnkly things! Gimme, gimme gimme. Give that to me!" After giving her 82,000 Fol: "An exclusive contract? I don't understand really, but sure, why not!? People who give me money are good people! You know, I want to make a tower of money and live at the top. I'm small, so it's okay." Not giving her 82,000 Fol: "Hmph... You don't have to be so angry... Such a nasty temper!" ------------------------------------------------------- Ansala Location: Aquaria Castle, Lasselle's Room To recruit, offer: Philosopher's Stone Prior to recruiting: "My life has been filled with riches and fame. What could you possibly give someone such as me?" After showing him the Philosopher's Stone: "Did you make that? Hmm, let me take a look at it." After giving him the Philosopher's Stone: "You are very promising... I just might devote the rest of my days to imparting all my knowledge upon you." Not giving him the Philosopher's Stone: "Oh, it's just a well-made fake... Still, even being able to make it look good from the outside is quite a feat." ------------------------------------------------------- Osman the Sage Location: Airyglyph, Abandoned Temple To recruit, offer: Strange Book Prior to recruiting: "I do not have much time left. To think this is all I would get out of such great sacrificies and devout study. I am appalled at my own foolishness." After showing him the Strange Book: "Hmm!? Who wrote that book!? This just might prove useful in my research." After giving him the Strange Book: "Are you saying that you shall give it to me!? Oh, I must thank you indeed. If there is anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask." "Hmm... I would not mind signing with you. Let us waste no time drawing up the contract." Not giving him the Strange Book: "I see... Well, I would like to look through it if the occassion presents itself next time. It would be nice if I could find what I am looking for." ------------------------------------------------------- Gusto Location: Southern Peterny To recruit, offer: 60,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "Are you seeking one of the weapons I've made? If so, you must visit the nearby store. But the finer weapons will cost you." After showing him 60,000 Fol: "I don't normally do this... But this alone is worthy compensation. I'm not particular about my patrons as long as they value my weapons. That means everything to me. I guarantee unparalleled quality." After giving him 60,000 Fol: "We have a deal! It may take some time, but I guarantee it will be worth the wait. Not giving him 60,000 Fol: "Do as you wish, for it is you yourself who determines the value of my weapons." ------------------------------------------------------- Cornelius Location: Airyglyph, High-Quality Armorer "Tiamat" To recruit, offer: Sunrise Dictionary Prior to recruiting: "My memory is just terrible these days. Now what was I thinking about before? I just can't remember! Oh yes, it was that... that... Ohhh! I can't stand it when this happens!" After showing him the Sunrise Dictionary: "Huh!? I should try looking through this? That just might help..." After giving him the Sunrise Dictionary: "Yes! That's it! This made me remember. Phew, I feel much better now. Thanks for the help. Huh, sign with you? Sure, that's but a small price to pay." Not giving him the Sunrise Dictionary: "Can't find it... Well, thanks anyway. And it's on the tip of my tongue! But it just won't come out. Ohhh! I'm this close to remembering!" ------------------------------------------------------- Gossam Location: North Peterny To recruit, offer: Potion of Youth (Fake) Prior to recruiting: "I'm not interested in talking to you. I'm only interested in chasing beautiful women. I don't exaggerate when I say my purpose in life is to be pampered by them!" After showing him the Potion of Youth (Fake): "Oh, young man! Is that... Could it really be!? Now you have my attention." After giving him the Potion of Youth (Fake): "W-with this, I could find lots of ladies and do this... and that! And--and the other thing!" Not giving him the Potion of Youth (Fake): "Y-You would run off and get pampered and leave me here alone, would you!? I'm green! Green with envy! You... You playboy! You disgust me! Please... Please, take me with you!" ------------------------------------------------------- Stanice Location: Surferio, Roger's House To recruit, offer: Prior to recruiting: "I've got a little free time on my hands now, so I'm making all sorts of little knick-knacks. I love cute things. Hehe!" After showing her the Limited-Edition Doll: "Ah! Is that a Limited-Edition Super Doll? This is a special, limited-edition Gohx model full of rare parts, isn't it? Ahh... it's so cute..." After giving her the Limited-Edition Doll: "What!? Are you sure!? Woohoo!!! But... You want a contract in return? If that's all you want, sure. But wait! I've never made anything else, so I'm pretty sure I can only make cute things well..." Not giving her the Limited-Edition Doll: "Woohoo! Seeing this really makes my day!" ------------------------------------------------------- Damda Mooda Location: West Aquios To recruit, offer: Winking Sage Cider Prior to recruiting: "Oh no! I'm out of cider! *hiccup*" After showing him the Winking Sage Cider: "Hmm? Hmmm!? What's that I smell? What is it? Perfume? No... that's not it. Wait, it's... It's the scent of cider! Oh, what a glorious scent. You have some fine cider there. It has the fragrance of flowers!" After giving him the Winking Sage Cider: "What's the meaning of this!? Why this is raw cider! Gulp... Hmm? You look surprised. Well, listen here. I'll explain it to you. This hasn't been heat treated. If cider is not heat treated, its naturally rich, mellow flavor is lost soon after it's bottled. And... Hey, are you even listening to me!?" Not giving him the Winking Sage Cider: "I don't just look like I want it, I really do want it! I want to smell it! And I want to drink it!" ------------------------------------------------------- Vanilla Location To recruit, offer: 30,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "I don't get many customers here. I've thought about moving, but..." After showing him 30,000 Fol: "If I had that much money, I could move to a better place." After giving him 30,000 Fol: "I've grown tired of this place. Maybe I should find a more lively place to live." Not giving him 30,000 Fol: "I'm working hard, but that's not the issue here." ------------------------------------------------------- Balbados Location: Mosel Dunes To recruit, offer: Antique Jewelry Prior to recruiting: "I see you can't tell whether this is real or not. Well, it's a fake. If it were real, it'd be worth an entire city. It's likely a practice piece made about 100 years ago. And it was made by Dakson VII. Look--the name's right here." "It takes at least 30 years of practice before you are capable of making such an appraisal." After showing him the Antique Jewelry: "That's the legendary... Do you want me to appraise it to see whether it's real or not?" After giving him the Antique Jewelry: "Hmm... Even I can't give you an immediate answer. It'll take a while longer. I'll just keep this until then. Don't worry. I won't run off with it. I'll even appraise it back at your workshop if you'd like." Not giving him the Antique Jewelry: "Well, it's probably a fake. Besides, the original is the only one in the world. I suppose it's owned by some kind of great holy man." ------------------------------------------------------- Boyd Location: Arias, General Store "Jack Potato" To recruit, offer: Bent Mystic Blade Prior to recruiting: "I've made swords to take life and armor to protect it. Whether friend or foe, warriors of renown flock to me for my wares. And someone always gets killed when they fight. In short, my conduct is a contradiction unto itself. And so is my existence..." After showing him the Bent Mystic Blade: "That's quite a beat-up sword you have there. How'd you manage to survive this far using that? Let me see what I can do with it." After giving him the Bent Mystic Blade: "A fine sword... and a skilled wielder, I see... I think you'll do. You seem like a person worth making some weapons and armor for." Not giving him the Bent Mystic Blade: "Hmm? Why not? Well, it's your sword. So be it." ------------------------------------------------------- Mackwell Location: Castle Aquaria, Library of Theology To recruit, offer: Pook of Prophecies 1 Prior to recruiting: "Whatever you want, make it quick. Oh, and... I've no interest in money." After showing him the Book of Prophecies 1: "Is that...! I'd be happy to work with you if you'd let me study it for a while." After giving him the Book of Prophecies 1: "So then we have a deal. It's mine now. All mine!" Not giving him the Book of Prophecies 1: "Bah... This is going nowhere. You're just wasting my time." ------------------------------------------------------- Misty Lear Location: Mountains of Barr, Workshop To recruit, offer: Spirit Stone Prior to recruiting: "I wonder if there's a way to save the souls of the dead." After showing her the Spirit Stone: "No matter how hard I suffered and toiled, I couldn't make one of those. *sigh* If only I could've made one..." After giving her the Spirit Stone: "Thank you. I should be able to save my daughter's soul with this. Oh, and... You may freely use my services in return for your kindness." Not giving her the Spirit Stone: "The lost bodies and shattered souls... All I can do is repent my own sins." ------------------------------------------------------- Milenya Location: Arias Chapel To recruit, offer: 3,200 Fol Prior to recruiting: "There are many people suffering throughout these lands. I want to help as many of them as possible." After showing her 3,200 Fol: "I could produce even better medicines if you'd invest in my work. And that investment would save the lives of many unfortunate people throughout these lands." After giving her 3,200 Fol: "Thank you so very much. May the grace of the gods be with you." Not giving her 3,200 Fol: "You're probably right. My family certainly wasn't poor, but even after investing my entire personal fortune, I was unable to save all the needy." ------------------------------------------------------- Lias Location: Airyglyph, Tavern "Dragon's Breath" To recruit, offer: 28,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: "Being bound by convention and merely criticizing those who are not will lead to stagnation and halt progress. You must produce results in order to silence those who obstruct your progress by labeling as a heretic you or anyone else who transcends rigid thinking." After showing him 28,000 Fol: "May I accept this large sum as proof that you have entrusted me with your swords, the life's blood of the warrior?" After giving him 28,000 Fol: "I have long sought to make those around me acknowledge my existence through my work. Now, that is no longer necessary. From this day forward, I shall work for your sake." Not giving him 28,000 Fol: "Do you already have a weapon to which you've entrusted your life? After showing her 90,000 Fol: "You desire my knowledge and wisdom? I am not cheap. You will pay in full for my services." After giving her 90,000 Fol: "Very well. To even consider it, you'll need the Blueprints, which you can get by completing the Rumina/Ruddle series of PAs, the AI Program, which you'll get in Sphere 211 before fighting Berial & Belzeber, and you'll have to have Vanilla, Meryl, and Dejison signed on. When you have all these things, head to Surferio. Examine the mechanical soldier, and you'll view a short scene between Meryl, Dejison, and Vanilla. Meryl: "Wow, So this is it." Vanilla: "Definitely... An interesting item, indeed." Dejison the Invention King: "Heheheee... I never grow tired of admiring its beautiful coloring. Just the thought of tinkering around with this makes me drool in anticipation, heh!" Meryl: "Ewww... Gross! Dirty old man!" Dejison the Invention King: "What!? Girl, I'm no dirty old man, I'm a Romeo! There's a difference, you know!" Meryl: "Yuck! Is that sweat? A drop of sweat hit me! On the face! Where's the soap!? Stay out of my personal space! Stay at least three meters away from me, I'm warning you!" Dejison, the Invention King: "Bah, shut your trap! Take this! *bam bam bam bam bam!!!*" Meryl: "What do you think you're doing!? All right, now I'm really mad!" Vanilla: "Oh boy. It looks like the two of you are occupied, so I guess I'll just tweak it myself." Meryl & Dejison: "Stop goofing off!" Vanilla: "Hmph... How very..." Meryl: "Zerp! Zerp! Ah yes, this is how a robot was meant to be!" Dejison the Invention King: "Bah, get with the times! Nobody uses inconvenient attachments like that anymore!" Meryl: "Shut up!!! I've had it with you! Don't come within two meters of me!" Dejison the Invention King: "What'!? Wha'!?" Vanilla: "I see, I see... All right, so let's chance this here..." Meryl: "Huh... So that's what it's like inside. I don't understand much of this old stuff." Vanilla: "It's a little old, but people see that as a plus. If you fix it up perfectly and find someone like that to sell it to, just think of how much you'll be able to get for it. Ah, something to look forward to!" Dejison the Invention King: "What, you want to sell it all of a sudden!? Don't even think about it!" Meryl: "What!? What's that? Arrrrgggghh!!! Burn it, Vanilla!!!" Vanilla: "Roger!" Dejison the Invention King: "Nooooo!!! My hidden stash of pretty clothes! What have you done!?" Dejison the Invention King: "My dream of creating the perfect Robo Woman... My romantic dream, in ruins..." Meryl: "Die!" Vanilla: "Heh... Can't say he didn't have it coming." Dejison the Invention King: "All my hopees... All my dreams... Ashes to ashes..." Meryl: "Be quiet already! Act like a man! Stop sniveling!!! And wipe your nose before you start dripping!" Dejison the Invention King: "Boohoo! *sob* Arggghh... *sob*" Vanilla: "You know, I don't think he's faking it. He's really crying, Meryl." Meryl: "Are you serious? Bleh!" Dejison the Invention King: "Boohoohoo!!!" Meryl: "What did I tell you about getting liquids in the precision machinery?" (Sound of impact, body falls) Meryl: "Hey, hand me that hexagonal wrench." Vanilla: "Sure, here you go." Meryl: "Oh yeah, sorry. I need that nut too." Vanilla: "This one?" Vanilla: "You know, the work is going much faster now." Meryl: "You know what I think? Maybe just the two of us should have done this work from the very beginning?" Meryl & Vanilla: "... ... ... ..." Vanilla: "All right, almost time to put on the finishing touches." Meryl: "Okay. Do your darndest." Vanilla: "Here we go." Meryl: "This is looking pretty good. What do you think?" Vanilla: "Absolutely perfect. This completely matches the blueprint." Meryl: "Excellent. I hereby name you Izak, which means 'gentle steel knight' in the language of the Kingdom of Greeton." You'll have a chance to send Izak to a workshop after this scene. You'll also get a notification telling you Izak has registered as an inventor. As far as I know, so long as you have the prerequisite items and inventors, you can get Izak at any time." ------------------------------------------------------- Rigel Location: Kirlsa Grocer "Iron Curtain" To recruit, offer: Golden Curry Prior to recruiting: "I'm hungry." After showing her the Golden Curry: "Oh, that looks yummy. You want me to sign a contract? I'd rather eat than cook..." After giving her the Golden Curry: "You don't mind if I eat it? Thanks! *chomp chomp* Uh... I'll fix you something if you don't mind me eating like this while I cook." Not giving her the Golden Curry: "I normally can eat all I want without gaining weight, but..." ------------------------------------------------------- Aqua & Evia Location: Peterny Temple To recruit, offer: 20,000 Fol Prior to recruiting: Both Aqua and Evia say the same thing as before they register as inventors. Speak to Evia directly to sign them on. After showing him 20,000 Fol: "Oh my! With that, I might be able to..." After giving him 20,000 Fol: "Now I should be able to help my daughter. No, I mean I WILL help my daughter, even if I have to sacrifice my own life. I hate to ask you after you gave me all that money, but if something were to happen to me, would you please look after my daughter?" Aqua: "Please take care of my papa should I die from my illness. I'd like you to make sure he doesn't starve himself to death." Evia: "Remember one thing: whatever may happen, don't you dare lay a finger on my daughter!" Fayt: (Maybe we should've thought twice before we got mixed up with these two?) Not giving him 20,000 Fol: "Wow... If I only had that much money, I could make some medicine to cure my daughter." ------------------------------------------------------- VII. Young people today lack common sense." ------------------------------------------------------- Mayu: "Hehehe... That is because in Airyglyph, there is a form of happiness unique to the people of Airyglyph, and in Aquaria, there is a form of happiness that is unique to the people of Aquaria." ------------------------------------------------------- Gusto: "Patience is a virtue. Aha ha ha ha ha." ------------------------------------------------------- Boyd: "You could say I'm in good form... Then again you could say something's lacking." ------------------------------------------------------- Mackwell: "I finished today's quota yesterday. It's not in my nature to allow myself to be pressed for time." ------------------------------------------------------- Misty Lear: "The positive and the negative cancel each other out. That's why it is so interesting, you see." ------------------------------------------------------- Milenya: "Proceed as far as you can when you should proceed, and stop completely when you should stop. If the way of splendor is beautiful, then the way of destruction is magnificent." ------------------------------------------------------- Gossam: "Hmm, maybe it's a good idea to get serious every once in a while. But don't get me wrong. I've been hard at work for hours. At least I've been trying..." ------------------------------------------------------- Stanice: "What a refreshing morning. Yes indeed. I feel as though I can do a good job today." ------------------------------------------------------- Damda Mooda: "A cup of tea is just the thing after a hard day's work. But desire knows no bounds. Besides, a true invention is born from overcoming many limitations." ------------------------------------------------------- Puffy: "The people of this town speak with a funny accent. I keep telling them my name is Puffy. That's pronounced 'PUH-fee.' Dice and slice. Chop chop chop!" ------------------------------------------------------- Meryl: "There are lots of ideas out there. The trick is how they're implemented. It's easy to come up with an idea, but actually following through with one to bring it to fruition is difficult." ------------------------------------------------------- Count Noppen: "This town has many people and a great deal of money changing hands. Now all it needs to be a perfect town is a great ruler such as myself." ------------------------------------------------------- Chilico: "Ummm... Uhhh... What was I trying to do? I completely forgot." ------------------------------------------------------- Ansala: "The Craftsman's Guild has its headquarters here in Peterny. There are rumors both good and bad. Some of them are true, while others are not. I suppose the most important thing is whether people understand each other. Once there are those who wish to be privileged above others, it is no longer possible for everyone to be content." ------------------------------------------------------- Osman the Sage: "Just as only the strongest trees still stand after a gate, it is the men of exceptional ability who stand out during times of trouble. I think you should be able to drink it anyway you like, don't you?" ------------------------------------------------------- Vanilla: "No matter how fine a work you produce, it's meaningless unless there's someone willing to buy it. Every day's a chance to learn, isn't it? ------------------------------------------------------- Dejison: "Steel imported directly from Greeton is just a bit different from the normal kind. See how it sparkles like gemstone? Without this, I wouldn't be able to produce such fine components." ------------------------------------------------------- Puffy: "What a shabby place. Is this the best you could do? I've worked for a number of different people, but they all treated me better than this." ------------------------------------------------------- Izak: "Sputter, sputter-sputter... Sputter!" ------------------------------------------------------- Rigel: "This cheery old sun sure warms the bones. This would be a perfect day to stretch out in the field for a nap. Naps are good for digestion, you know." ------------------------------------------------------- Aqua: "Welch and the Guild Master are really nice. They're interesting in ways my father isn't, and they give me lots of candy." Evia: "My daughter has taken a liking to that Welch. Oh, what shall I do!? Aaachoo!" ------------------------------------------------------- Count Noppen: "Hmm... Umm... Uhh... I've got it! The ultimate poem! No, maybe a textbook!? Oh ho ho ho... The genre matters not. At any rate, it's sure to be a masterpiece. ------------------------------------------------------- Chilico: "Just a little more... a little more... But I suppose I'll never finish if I never start, huh?" ------------------------------------------------------- Ansala: "Do you think producing gold from stone violates the laws of nature? If so, you are mistaken. For one who comprehends all things and has full knowledge of the true qualities of materials, turning stone into gold can be likened to the simple act of turning water into steam by boiling it. The only difference is that the method for performing the former transformation is not widely known." ------------------------------------------------------- Osman the Sage: "One who excels in many areas is no match for one who has perfected a single talent. It's just like that saying: 'Jack of all trades, master of none.'" ------------------------------------------------------- Gusto: "This land has a special power. Its waters enable techniques that work nowhere else. Now what sort of sword shall I forge with such power? ------------------------------------------------------- Cornelius: "Driven from their lands by the humans who came down from heaven, the humanoids retreated far into the distand hills. But such are the vicissitudes of fortune. No one has the right to bear ill will against another." ------------------------------------------------------- Gossam: "What a fine city! There're lots of young ladies--how could I possibly complain? And you know they say that the more pretty ladies about, the easier it is to be devout in one's daily observances!" ------------------------------------------------------- Stanice: "I heard from my grandfather that in the distant past, the first humans descended into Surferio from the heavens. It seems there were many disputes at first, but now relations aren't all that bad. I think that's a good thing. What good does it do for people living today to keep worrying about times long past, when none of them were even born yet?" ------------------------------------------------------- Damda Mooda: "There're no taverns in this city. It's not that they don't like to have fun here, it's just they're not interested in taverns. This won't do. This won't do at all. I can't work in such a foolish place!" ------------------------------------------------------- Vanilla: "Combining religion with commerce just isn't right, is it? It's true you can sell lots of stuff by making use of religion, but that takes all the joy out of it. People who do that shouldn't even call themselves merchants." ------------------------------------------------------- Balbados: "Crafting is a precise art. It demands finger movements so deft they can hardly be seen with the eye, as well as aesthetic sensibilities. Fine crafting is impossible unless you truly love to do it. Hoh ho ho ho ho..." ------------------------------------------------------- Boyd: "I can work anywhere! And I won't let you quibble about my work." ------------------------------------------------------- Mackwell: "This won't do. Seems I've fallen a bit behind. But I'll try to somehow finish by nightfall." ------------------------------------------------------- Misty Lear: "This land certainly is brimming with some sort of power. However... True alchemists do not rely on the unknown. No, we must first unravel the great mysteries of this world--therein lies the heart of our trade." ------------------------------------------------------- Milenya: "Even medicine is poison when in excess. Always use just the right amount." ------------------------------------------------------- Lias: "Maybe I could try using the waters that surround this city to temper a sword. Hmm... I think it's worth a try." ------------------------------------------------------- Louise the Diviner: "Are you trying to prematurely dispatch me to the land of Apris by making me work in such a place? Honestly... What a loathsome lot." ------------------------------------------------------- Mayu: "I'm not comfortable with live fish. After all, we didn't see stuff like that very much in Airyglyph. ------------------------------------------------------- Dejison: "Runological force? It'll disappear in due time. The machine I made will enable anyone to easily do things far beyond that." ------------------------------------------------------- Puffy: "Uhh... To tell you the truth, there's something missing. What I really want to create is something super strong that'll make your head spin, even with one little whiff." ------------------------------------------------------- Izak: "Vroom! Vroom! Beep beep beep." ------------------------------------------------------- Rigel: "It's hard to keep my eyes open with a full belly. You mind if I go take a short nap?" ------------------------------------------------------- Aqua: "This city reeks of religion. All they do is pray, day in and day out. I'm going to die of boredom here." Evia: "Yes, this is a fine city. The air, water, and food are good, but more than anything, it's the feel of purity that this city has that I like. I think it's perfect for my daughter and me, but what do you think? Hahaha... of course it is!" ------------------------------------------------------- IX. Dictionary Entries Each inventor, after being signed, adds an entry to the dictionary to shed a little light into their backstory. Since the Dictionary FAQ on this site didn't have complete information on the inventors, it seemed only fair to include it in this guide. Mishell: A cheeky young boy living in the city of Aquios, Mishell seems to think of himself as an adult. He loves to read books, and carries around tomes that are difficult enough to make an adult's head spin. Perhaps his tendency to memorize entire chapters without really understanding the ideas expressed within is evidence that, gifted as he may be, Mishell is after all, still a child. Eliza: A young girl living in the town of Aquios who is quite fond of her studies. Eliza had dreamt of someday studying runology at Castle Aquaria, until the loss of both her parents in the war forced her to give it up. Her brother was too young to live on his own, and she couldn't bear to leave him. However, even though Eliza gave up studying under a mentor, she still continues to study runology on her own. Grats: A master swordsman who wielded his sword on battlefields long before Fayt was born. Having been forced to retire from the regular army, this lifelong warrior fought on as a mercenary until requrests for his services dried up, he then continued fighting anway as a volunteer soldier. Unfortunately, by the time the latest war began, Grats exceeded the age restrictions of every unit, and was finally forced to retire completely. Regardless, Grats still wants to fight, and wanders aimlessly around the outskirts of the town of Kirlsa, looking for any trouble he can find. The Killer Chef: A humanoid of the Drowglynn race, members of which mainly reside in the Sanmite Republic. Conversations with this man (or woman?) never seem to go anywhere. Even so, the Chef's conversational abilities are actually vastly superior to those of the typical Drowglynn. This is because the Chef is so interested in the human race, he's actually taken it upon himself to learn how to cook. The thought process of Drowglynns are, for the most part, entirely foreign to the human mind. In fact, it is said that not even the gods themselves are capable of perfectly translating the language of this bizarre race. Meryl: A girl who studied the mechanical arts in the technological superpower of Greeton. Meryl had to return to her homeland with her parents after only a few years of study. Yet even so, her time spent growing up in Greeton's mechanically advanced society from an early age had a major impact on her life. In spite of her young age, Meryl may actually know more about machines than anyone else currently living on the continent of Gaitt. On a side note, there are humans living in Greeton as well, and Aquarians living in Greeton face no discrimination in their everyday lives. However, since the two nations have had no formal relations for centuries, such intrepid individuals must face the double jeopardy of entering and exiting Greeton illegally. Count Noppen: A member of the nobility of the Kingdom of Airyglyph. Although it is unknown how this gentleman managed to survive the revolution of Airyglyph XIII, he does retain his nobility. Perhaps the Count has some skill in the arts, or perhaps he is a preeminent warrior, or scholar. It is also possible that the king kept him around simply because he's such an amusing old chap. Chilico: A Bubbleheart woman who left her homeland in the Sanmite Republic in order to find work. Chilico may be cute and tiny, but that is simply a racial characteristic. She's actually quite old. And quite married. Ansala: Although retired at present, Ansala used to be the best or second best practitioner of runology in the Sacred Kingdom of Aquaria. This lonely man poured too much of himself into his work to ever marry, and in spite of the fact that he has already retired, he can still be seen wandering the halls of Castle Aquaria, alternately gladdening and annoying the inhabitants thereof. Ansala's skills are unquestioned, and his record is excellenet, making him a difficult individual for the current runologists to simply brush off. Osman: A priest who preaches the ways of the gods to the people of the town of Arias. Osman loves proverbs, precepts, and other "nice little turns of phrase", and has written and published several such works of his own. But for some reason, perhaps related to the complexity of his philosophies, his works are not terribly popular. Gusto: A gifted blacksmith who used to live in the town of Kirlsa, and who specializes in forging swords. After the output of Bequerel Mine and other mines around Kirlsa trailed off dramatically, Gusto set off on an adventure to find better mines to excavate on his own. Gusto is the only person who actually competes with dragons for the control of mineral resources in all of Elicoor. Cornelius: A mysterious individual who, although he appears to be human at first glance, most definitely is not. Although his speech, actions, and other characteristics mark him as a humanoid, Cornelius resembles no race to be found anywhere in the Republic of Sanmite, nor any race living anywhere else in the continent of Gaitt. One must wonder what use Cornelius might find for his trademark dilapidated bat umbrella. One thing is certain--he can't be using it to keep the rain off his head. Gossam: While Gossam is actually a rather skilled doctor, he sends all of his patients home with medicine, no matter how seriously ill they may be. The only reason no one has yet filed a complaint against Gossam is that the medicine he prescribes actually does a miraculous job of curing his patients. Stanice: A woman of the Featherfolk, a race that boasts large wings extending from their backs. Perhaps because she is extremely light, even for a Featherfolk, Stanice enjoys taking long "walks" in the clouds, flying from place to place. Nightfall often catches up to Stanice during her outings, and she is forced to wait for daybreak all alone, up in the treetops. Damda Mooda: A sybarite who is more than meets the eye. While chopping wood in the mountains with his buddies, Damda laerned a method of cooking that he decided to make his own, referring to it by the absurd name of Damda Casserole. He then started his own restaurant in an attempt to sell this cuisine, failed miserably, and went bankrupt in the blink of an eye. Perhaps the tragic end to Damda's story should come as no surprise. Anyone can bang together a casserole out of vegetables, mushrooms, and whatever flavorings are at hand. Vanilla: A young Retail Rabbit living in the Urssa Lava Caves for an unknown reason. This eccentric character is interested in manufacturing as well as sales, unlike most Retail Rabbits. One characteristic he does share with the others is an obnoxious fixation on money. It is possible that Vanilla may be making a living by selling to the dragons. But when you think about it, what would a dragon want, anyway? Balbados: An old man of the Menodix race, members of which primarily reside in the vicinity of Surferio. Although Balbados had the courage to make a go of it in a foreign land, and put his best efforts into running a business in a human town, he has failed to achieve his dreams and currently ekes out a meager existence. Balbados makes a living day to day on crowded thoroughfares by selling silver items that he creates with his naturally dexterous hands. Boyd: A male Demonoid, which is a cross between a human and a demon. Boyd possesses the brute strength and symbological powers of a demon, as well as the flexibility and stability of a human soul. But in spite of these advantages, Boyd needs to work for a living, just as everyone else does. Mackwell: An ingenious alchemist who graduated second in his class from the runological school located inside Castle Aquaria, which he attended as a foreign exchange student. Mackwell is extremely fussy about his time's value, and always carries a schedule with each day's tasks lissted down to the second. Acting alone, this gifted alchemist and scholar derived a unification theory that ties together channeled force and magnetism, while working with Dion in Dr. Elena's research lab. This theory is what finally allowed the development of the Thunder Arrow to proceed. Unfortunately, after this breakthrough, Mackwell grew fed up with Dr. Elena's unstructured and carefree working style, and quit the research lab. In lieu of a retirement package, Mackwell made off with one of Elena's books, and still travels with it to this day. Misty Lear: A beautiful young woman with a mysteriously timeless presence. Misty Lear is a superb alchemist, and since her appearance has not changed in decades, it is rumored that perhaps she has perfected an elixir of eternal youth. The truth of the matter, however, is simply that the most talented alchemist of her clan always takes the name Misty. Milenya: A trueborn noble and head of one of the top two houses of the Kingdom of Airyglyph. Recently, however, Milenya has expressed objections to the war with the Kingdom of Aquaria, and this has earned her the wrath of the powerful warmonger Duke Vox. Vox had her branded as a rebel and subjected to house arrest. Unsurprisingly, not even Vox dared to execute the head of a noble house with such a long and distinguished heritage. But even a punishment as light as house arrest must be difficult to endure for a woman who has known nothing but luxury since bith. Lias: A human refugee on the continent of Gaitt, who hails from an island nation located to the far north. Lias is a man of many talents, excelling at horsemanship, swordsmanship, and archery. This leads many to believe he must have been a man of high standing in his own country. When questioned about his past, however, Lias always responds with little more than a sad smile, revealing nothing. Louise the Diviner: A cranky old woman with extremely prominent frown lines permanently etched upon her forehead. Although she led the Craftsman's Guild over a period of four years, her cantankerous personality led even her own flesh and blood to abandon her, and nowadays she lives a solitary existence. In her heyday, Louise had her own special program on the compact communicator, in which she would show off her soothsaying talents. Mayu: A girl living in the Kirlsa Training Facility who, along with her mother, takes care of the soldiers of the Black Brigade. Mayu wears her heart on her sleve, and tires of things easily, perhaps becaause her life involves day after day of nothing but repetitive chores around the training facility. Even though she often dreams of blowing up and venting her anger at her tiresome existence, she's basically a harmless girl. Dejison: An elderly scholar who was permanently sidetracked after becoming enamored with the intricate workings of the Mechanized Corps, while conducting research in the city of Surferio. This troubled individual, who likes to refer to himself as "Dejison, the Invention King", has applied for patents to countless useless inventions, which he derives by following a feckless and scattergun approach to inventing. Puffy: A stiff-haired girl who follows Fayt and his companions around, saying, "No more, five yeras before! No more, seven years before!" as if it were some sort of key phrase, for no apparent reason. This odd phrase may make perfect sense to those who understand its context, but it means nothing at all to Fayt. It's almost as if a desire for revenge is filling her with rage and makes her pick fights. Izak: A humanoid robot created by the technological superpower Greeton that supposedly destroyed the Ancient Kingdom of Aquor. Whether there was a mistake in the robot's blueprint, or whether those who repaired it were at fault is uncertain, but this machine, which used to be a merciless killing machine, is now but a mere appliance. This robot's official name is "Izak Type B-Mech". Rigel: A young noblewoman of the Sacred Kingdom of Aquaria who loves nothing better than to stare off into space and dine on fine food. Rigel is incredibly picky when it comes to the food she eats. She somehow became ann excellent chef herself in the process of hounding her family's resident chef morning, noon, and night to ensure that her meals are prepared according to her exacting standards. Aqua: A beautiful girl with one of the most hopelessly doting fathers in the world, a man named Evia. Aqua may look as lovely as a dool, but her words pack a powerful bite. Of course, if you ask her father Evia, Aqua's questionable word choice is just one more aspect of her overwhelming cuteness. Evia: A long-haired man of refined tastes who used to work in Castle Aquaria several years back. Worried about leaving his daughter Aqua at home by herself all day, Evia repeatedly skipped work or went home early. The problem grew so severe that he was eventually fired, in spite of his high status within the castle. But rather than regretting this turn of events, Evia was actually pleased to have more time to spend with his daughter. X.
