Crono is the hero of the game and the first playable character. Although he is the game's protagonist he never speaks in the game's dialogue, allowing the player to make their own judgments about his personality. Generally, he seems to be portrayed as a stoic, heroic leader who cares deeply for his friends. He wields a Katana and uses Lightning (Holy in the Japanese version) magic to defeat his enemies and aid his friends. 'Crono' likely came from the Greek word meaning time; 'Chrono'. It is speculated that he was only called Crono because of the game's five letter limit on names.
