The battle system in Crono Trigger is much like the other RPGs in Square's Trophy cabinet of excellent RPGs. As in most other Square RPGs actions can only be taken by characters after the ATB gauge is full. Each character has 3 possible options to choose from; Attack – Physically attack the target using the equipped weapon, Tech – use one of the various techniques available in the game and Item – select and use an item. There is, however, a feature almost unique to Chrono Trigger. If two or more characters have full ATB gauges, they can use Techniques that were not available when only one character could take action. A double, or triple, Technique uses two or more characters to attack together. These multi-character abilities are frequently either more powerful or have more positive effects than the ordinary single character techniques.
